Davangere was separated from Chitradurga district to form a new district in 1997. Davanagere got its name from the word "Davanakere" which means "Village of Lake". Davanagere was ruled by Chalukyans, Pandyas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagar rulers. After the downfall of Vijayanagara Kingdom, it came under the local "Palyagars" of Chitradurga. This part of land became very prosperous during the control of Tippu Sultan and Mysore Maharajas.
Davangere city, the district headquarters, now an important commercial, industrial and educational centre. Davangere is also famous for its textile and cotton mills.


Durgambika Temple
A popular and biggest temple dedicated to Goddess Durgambika is located in Halepet in Shivajinagar. Godess Durgamma is also known by different names such as Dugamma, Durgavva, Durgambika, etc. A grand fair once in 2 years will be celebrated here.

Anagodu is just 16 km from Davanagere. The main attraction of Anagodu is an ancient temple of 11th century.

Hadali is about 12 km from Davanagere. The few attractions of Hadali are an ancient temple of Ittigekallu Ranganatha and Inscriptions of 11th century are found here.

Harihar also spelled Hari-hara, combining the two major gods, Vishnu (Hari) and Siva (Hara). Harihar is located on the banks of Tungabhadra river. The region of Harihar had been under the control of the Hoysalas from 11th to 13th Century AD. The main attraction of Harihar is the ancient Harihareshwara temple of 12th century. The temple is built in the Hoysala style. Every year the Car festival shall be celebrated with great enthusiasm and lots of people participate.
Mayakonda is about 30 km from Davanagere. The main attraction of Mayakonda are temples of Keshava and Obaleshwara.
