Shankaracharya witnessed the amazing moments of the tigers showing caring love and affection towards an orphaned deer at Ahoka, A grove where the great saint Varadamuni was doing penance.

Varadamuni welcomed Shankaracharya and handed over the sacred idols of Lord Rama, Lakshmana, Sita Mata as well as Chanrdamouleshwara Lingas to Shankaracharya with the intention that they could be worshipped permanently by Saints. Varadamuni had received these Idols from his Spiritual guru Agasthyamuni. Sri Shankaracharya set up a holy Mutt in his beautiful place, called Raghuothama Mutt with the main objective to work for the spiritual wellbeing of the entire society also to undertake the worship of these sacred idols.

Sri Shankaracharya then appointed his follower Sri Vidyananda, (who took deeksha from shree Sureshacharya) as the first chief of this Mutt. Therefore started the superb unbroken line of Peetadishas of Raghuthama Mutt which is referred to as Sri Ramachandrapura Mutt. The present chief Sri Ragaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji became peethadipathi on 28-Apr-1999, is the 36th Guru in this Avichinna parampara.

Sri Shankaracharya instructed that all the pontiffs of Sri Ramachandrapura Mutt should offer their worship and service to Atmalinga, the presiding deity of Shree Mahabaleshwara temple, Gokarna.
