Since River Varada originates from this place, hence the name Varadamoola. River Varada flows through the Banavasi town before joining Tungabhadra River.

The Varada, another tributary of the Tungabhadra, takes her birth at Varadamoola near Ikkeri in Sagar Taluk, flows north past Chandragutti (Sorab taluk) and reach Banavasi town (Sirsi Taluk of Uttara Kannada district) and turns towards the North-East. River Varada then enters the Dharwad district; she flows towards north, bending round gradually to the north east. South of Bankapur and Savanur, she runs with an easterly path into the Tungabhadra at Galaganatha below Havanur.
According to the legend, it is believed that the Varada originated in the Bhagirathi water poured from his conch by Lord Vishnu on the head of Lord Shiva at Varada-moola in order to calm down the fire of austerities performed by Shiva.
